Paul Spaventa, Offered The Job of Gloucester City School Superintendent; Two Board Members Not Allowed to Vote
Correction: An earlier headline read that Spaventa was named as City Superintendent. He has not been appointed, the job was offered to him. The contract is being negotiated.
The Gloucester City Board of Education at Tuesday meeting, voted to offer Paul Spaventa the position of Superintendent over Gloucester High School Principal Jack Don. The vote was made after two Board of Education members (Bruce Darrow and Bruce Marks) were notified they would not be entitled to vote as they had relatives working in the school district.
Nearly 19 candidates expressed interest and the entire Board of Education voted that both Don and Spaventa would advance as the top two finalists.
The Board of Education will now negotiate a contract with Mr. Spaventa. If he accepts the Board's offer Mr. Spaventa will begin his tenure in November and take full control on January 1, 2008.
Dr. Stansky will leave January 1, 2008 with a current salary of approximately $175,000.

Was it just me, or did anyone else read this quote from our new superintendent in the Gloucester City News:
In response to a question asked by Board Member Kimberly Waddington of how the candidate would interact to the community, and their feelings about it Mr. Spaventa said, "It is important to reach out; with the council, the mayor and the community, along with attending town functions like Beef and Beer's and parades."
LMAO that's hilarious to me, "beef and beers", Mr. Spaventa should fit right in.

It is my hope that MR.Spaventa will inspire a spirit of good will for each child ---understanding of the needs of our parents------and, an appreciation for the efforts of the entire school staff.

It is unfortunate Mr. Don was not offered the job, but I have to agree with the comment above that finally we can take our schools back from Mary Stansky and her cronies on the board. To the board members who stand up for our kids and do not play politics like some people on the board keep up the good work.

Congratulations to Mr Spaventa. It is ashamed that Mr Don was not appointed, but the City was a winner with either one. Let us hope Mr Spaventa and Mr Don will work towards better public relations. Let us get back to THESE ARE OUR SCHOOLS. It is unfortunate that several members were unable to vote, but the City has finally been given our schools back. Let this be a reminder to Mr Coxe and his BOE entourage that the residents want his poilitical battles kept at headquarters and not in his BOE opinions.
