STOCKTON OSPREYS UPDATE April 29, 2008
BASEBALL TEAM ADVANCES TO NJAC TOURNAMENT
(April 22) The Stockton
baseball team pounded out 18 hits and rolled to a 14-1 victory over Neumann in a
non-conference game at Bernie Robbins Stadium. Stockton head coach Marty
Kavanagh collected his 100th victory in his sixth season on the Ospreys’ bench.
Matt Hunt (Marlton/St. Joseph) went 4-4 with two RBI and two runs while
Pat Goodwin (Mays Landing/Holy Spirit) was 3-4 with two runs scored.
Scott Fisher (Toms River/TR East) also went 2-3 with a double and an RBI
for the Ospreys.
Winning pitcher Sean Donovan (Hazlet/Raritan) tossed
a complete game and allowed one run on four hits with five strikeouts. The game
was stopped in the seventh inning due to the 10-run rule. Stockton scored seven
runs in the first inning, including two on a single by Matt Allen
(Salem/Woodstown) and one on an RBI single by Fisher, for a 7-0 lead.
Allen earned another RBI on a sacrifice fly as part of a two-run
second inning that increased the lead to 9-0. Hunt added RBI singles in
the third and fourth innings as the Ospreys continued to pull away, leading 14-0
after four frames. Neumann spoiled the shutout bid by Donovan with its
only run on a groundout in the fifth inning and Stockton coasted to the 14-1
win.
(April 24) Stockton fell short 6-4 in an NJAC road game at 25th-ranked
Rowan. Matt Allen went 3-4 with an RBI and Jeff Lundell (Henderson,
NY/Kentridge (WA)) was 1-4 with a double and two RBI for the Ospreys.
Stockton pitcher Joe Mihalyi (Hamilton/Nottingham) hurled a complete game
and allowed six runs (two unearned) on nine hits in a solid
performance.
Stockton jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning
as Joe Sacerdote (Deptford/Gloucester Catholic) notched an RBI on a
groundout and Lundell ripped a two-run double. After Rowan got on the
board in the second frame, Allen stroked an RBI single in the top of the
third for a 4-1 advantage. Rowan overtook the Ospreys with four runs in the
bottom of the third and pulled ahead 5-4. Stockton managed just four hits over
the final six innings and the Profs added an insurance run in the eighth for the
6-4 final.
(April 26) Stockton clinched a spot in the NJAC playoffs with a
sweep of William Paterson by scores of 7-4 and 10-9 in the regular season
finale. In the opener, winning pitcher Scott Fisher allowed four runs on
seven hits with seven strikeouts in a complete game. Fisher also went 1-4
at the plate with a two-run double. Nick Corrado (West Deptford/Gloucester
Catholic) went 3-5 with two RBI while Pat Goodwin was 2-2 with a run
and an RBI.
Fisher snapped a 3-3 tie with a two-run double in the
fourth inning that gave Stockton a 5-3 lead. In the fifth frame, Fisher
reached on an error and two runs scored on the play to increase the Ospreys’
lead to 7-3. William Paterson scored a run with two outs in the ninth inning,
but Fisher retired the next batter to complete the 7-4 Stockton
victory.
Stockton scored five runs in the bottom of the ninth to erase a 9-5
deficit and win the nightcap 10-9 on a walk-off single by Jeff Lundell,
who was 3-5 with two RBI in the game. Lundell also extended his current
hitting streak to 10 games. Goodwin went 3-5 with a triple and three runs
for the Ospreys.
William Paterson scored five unearned runs in the eighth
inning to take a 9-5 lead. Stockton roared back with five runs on six hits in
the bottom of the ninth to snatch the 10-9 victory. The last four tallies came
on four consecutive RBI hits with two outs. Goodwin blasted an RBI triple
and scored on a single by Fisher, who then stole second base. Next,
Joe Sacerdote slapped an RBI single and advanced to second on the throw
home. Lundell then ripped a walk-off single to score Sacerdote
