Police alert to spread of hoax e-mail warnings

Cherry Hill police have had to deal with several hoax e-mails - often identifying the township's mall as a crime hot spot - in recent years. The latest, in November, claimed gangs had targeted the Cherry Hill Mall and Northeast Philadelphia's Franklin Mills for violent attacks.

When such e-mail lands, Cherry Hill Police Lt. William Kushina said, he first checks www.snopes.com to see if the mail matches any reported to that site.

Snopes checks the authenticity of widely circulated e-mail, among other things. It shows that a variation of the mall e-mail started in 2005 in Memphis, identifying a Wal-Mart.
