REDD APPLAUDS SUMMER HEAT & ONE STOP FOR GIVING LOCAL YOUTH HEAD-START

(CAMDEN) - Senator Dana L. Redd yesterday praised the work of a local jobs initiative that matches at-risk youth with valuable summer employment and internship experiences that will provide them with a head start in the state's increasingly competitive jobs market. The Fifth District legislator spoke at a job fair at the One Stop Career Center in Camden sponsored by the New Jersey Department of Labor, South Jersey Transportation Authority, and the Camden County One Stop Career Center.

"Summer HEAT and One Stop are proving essential in assisting young people to find jobs that will teach them the skills they will need to be successful," said Senator Redd. "With the nation teetering on the edge of recession, Summer HEAT and One Stop play a critical role in developing the skills necessary to help today's teens become tomorrow's successful adults."
The Senator was joined on the dais by Director of NJ Crime Prevention Strategy Creighton Drury, representing the Office of NJ Attorney General Anne Milgram; Camden City Acting Assistant Superintendent Davida Coe-Brockington; Commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development David J. Socolow; and Executive Director of the Camden County Workforce Investment Board Jeff Schwartz.
"Now more than ever, we must do everything possible to ensure that Camden's young people find jobs that can grow into successful careers," said Commissioner Socolow. "One Stop and Summer HEAT are showing first-hand how public-private partnerships can provide the opportunities our young people need to not only succeed in an increasingly competitive marketplace, but become leaders and role models in their communities, as well."
Also participating in the event were Camden County One Stop Career Center Assistant Director Frank Filipek, Jr., Vice President of HR for Volunteers of America Delaware Valley Mildred Samuels, and representatives from the South Jersey Transportation Authority.

The career fair was coordinated as part of the state Department of Labor's Summer HEAT (Help Employ Area Teens) 2008 initiative. The Summer HEAT program enlists public and private partners to provide paid and unpaid summer jobs and training for young people ages 14 to 25. Students from area high schools were bused to the event to apply for the more than 630 positions available to them this summer, paying between $7.50 and $10 per hour.
Employers on site included The Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa, US Vision,Express Personnel, Student Transportation of America, A-1 Dependable Cleaning, NEST International, UPS. Additional employers who will be hiring area youth for summer jobs include the Camden Riversharks, Harcourt Brace and Clementon Lake Park.
