ROWAN BASEBALL DEFEATS KEYSTONE, 14-9 IN NCAA DIVISION III CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT FIRST ROUND

NEWARK, NJ – The Rowan University baseball team had a 14-9 victory over Keystone College in game four of the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament first round at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium on Wednesday night.

 

The double elimination tournament continues on Thursday-Sunday, May 15-18.  On Thursday, fourth seeded Penn State Behrend (34-11) tacks on eighth seeded Gwynedd-Mercy College at 10 a.m., Keystone (30-11), the seventh seed, plays the sixth seed DeSales University (24-19-1) at 1:15 p.m., top seeded Kean University (36-9) faces the fifth seed Messiah College (28-16) at 4:30 p.m. and second seeded Rowan (31-12) plays the third seed The College of New Jersey (29-10) on Thursday, May 15 at 7:45 p.m.  Earlier on Wednesday, Messiah defeated Penn State Behrend, 8-1, Kean beat Gwynedd-Mercy, 8-6 and The College of New Jersey topped DeSales, 3-0.

 

Rowan left hander Ryan Kulik (sr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) earned the win on the mound.  Kulik (9-2) pitched five scoreless innings and struck out 10 batters.  Yadiel Lanzo (so. Loiza, PR/Carlos Escobar Lopez) took the loss (6-3) for Keystone.

 

First baseman Tom Ready (jr. Blenheim, NJ/Triton Reg.) led the Profs with three hits (five at bats), a double, three RBIs and three runs scored.  Third baseman Paul Urbanovich (sr. Rutherford, NJ/St. Peter's Prep) was three for six with one RBI and one run scored. Center fielder Garrett Mull (jr. Chatsworth, NJ/Lenape) went one for two with a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored. Shortstop Roland Rodriguez (so. Miami, FL/Miami Killian) added one hit (three at bats), two RBIs and three runs scored. Designated hitter Tom Reindel (jr. Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) drove in two runs.

 

For the Giants, third baseman Nelson Gomez (jr. Rio Grande, PR/Casiano Cepeda) was two for five with three RBIs.  Catcher Giovannie Sanchez (jr. Luquillo, PR/Maria Auxiliado) posted three hits (five at bats), one RBI and one run scored.  Right fielder Jayson Rohena (jr. Rio Grande, PR/Casiano Cepeda) contributed with one hit (five at bats), one RBI and two runs scored.  Designated hitter Angel Fargas (so. Rio Grande, PR/Puerto Rico Baseball Academy) had a double and two RBIs.

 

The Profs went up 5-0 in the bottom of the first inning.  Ready singled in Rodriguez and second baseman Joe Franceschini (sr. Toms River, NJ/Toms River E.) came home on an error.  Reindel drove in Ready with a single and Urbanovich crossed the plate on an error.  Mull's sacrifice bunt scored Reindel.  In the second, Reindel's sacrifice fly brought Ready home. 

 

Rowan added three runs in the third. Left fielder Frank Hasenauer (sr. Iselin, NJ/John F. Kennedy) came home on a fielder's choice, Urbanovich singled in Rodriguez and right fielder John McMullin (jr. Woodbury, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) drove Ready in with a single to left field.

 

Rowan went up 10-0 after Mull's solo homer down the left field line in the fourth.  Keystone got on the scoreboard with one run in the sixth.  Rohena scored on a ground out by Gomez.  The Profs tacked on three runs in the bottom half.  Rodriguez's double plated Mull and Fox.  Ready added a RBI double.  The Giants got eight runs in the top of the eighth to cut the deficit to 13-9.  Fargas recorded a two run double and Sanchez followed with a RBI single.  Left fielder Donald Reese (fr. Shippensburg, PA/Big Spring) knocked in one run with a double to left field and he scored on an error.  Second baseman Cody Collins' (jr. Millsboro, DE/Delmar) sacrifice fly plated left fielder Ray Jackson (so. Lewes, DE/Cape Henloten) and Gomez's singled brought in Rohena and shortstop Kyle Conrad (jr. Whitehall, PA/Whitehall).  In the bottom half, left fielder Keith Evans (so. Audubon, NJ/Audubon) came home on an error to make the score 14-9.
