STOCKTON OSPREYS UPDATE
BASEBALL TEAM PLAYS IN NJAC TOURNAMENT
UPCOMING EVENTS (Home games in CAPS)
(May 1) The Stockton
baseball team was overwhelmed 14-2 by eighth-ranked Kean in the first round of
the NJAC tournament. Chris Discher (Cherry Hill/CH West) went 2-4 with a
run and Pat Goodwin (Mays Landing/Holy Spirit) was 2-4 at the plate.
Jeff Lundell (Henderson, NV/Kentridge (WA)) ripped a solo home run and
Matt Allen (Salem/Woodstown) added a double for the Ospreys. Stockton
managed just seven hits and committed six errors in the game.
Kean took a 2-0
lead in the bottom of the first inning, but Lundell led off the second
frame with a solo home run to get Stockton on the board. Kean responded with
four runs in the bottom of the second for a 6-1 cushion. The Cougars boosted
their lead to 11-1 after six innings. In the top of the eighth, Discher
singled and later scored on a double play for Stockton’s second run of the game.
Kean tacked on three more tallies in the bottom of the eighth for a 14-2 final
score.
(May 3) Sixth-seeded Stockton was eliminated from the NJAC tournament
with a 7-5 loss to second-seeded Montclair State in 10 innings. Joe Sacerdote
(Deptford/Gloucester Catholic) led the Ospreys by going 3-5 with two runs.
Jeff Lundell was 2-4 with an RBI while Chris Discher went 2-5 with
a run. Scott Fisher (Toms River/TR East) allowed three runs and fanned
six in nine innings pitched but was not involved in the decision.
With
Stockton trailing 3-1, Matt Allen led off the bottom of the eighth with a
walk and then stole second base. He advanced to third on a sacrifice and scored
on an RBI groundout by Mike Mitton (Lanoka Harbor/ Lacey Twp.) to make
the score 3-2. The Ospreys tied the game at 3-3 with a run in the bottom of the
ninth frame. Singles by Sacerdote and Lundell set the stage for an
RBI single by Matt Hunt (Marlton/St. Joseph) that delivered
Sacerdote with the tying run.
Montclair took a 7-3 lead with four runs
on four hits in the top of the tenth, but Stockton had one last-ditch effort. In
the bottom half, Mitton walked and eventually scored on an error. Two
batters later, Discher scored when Lundell walked with the bases
loaded and two outs. The Ospreys still had the bases loaded when the final out
was made as their rally fell short, 7-5.
