Saturday, April 19 the Mount Ephraim Girls Softball (MEGS) held their opening day activities.  The day was also reserved to honor MEGS founder Mr. Frank Corson.

Opening Day was dedicated to a man who not only lived in Mount Ephraim for 47 years, but was also very active in the community. He served as President of MEPRI for over 10 years, and Captain of the Mount Ephraim Ambulance Squad (MEPRI EMS) for over 20 years.

2008419_005  SPECIAL PLAQUE - Each of Frank's children; Debra, Patricia, Barbara, Denise, and Kirk received a special commemorative Softball Plaque engraved with the dedication date as a keep-sake of this special day.

Frank was remembered and honored as the Originator of the Mt. Ephraim Girls Softball League. Back in 1972, being the community minded person that Frank was and the father of four girls, his idea turned into and is still known today as a well ran softball league and organization that Frank was proud of. Not only was Frank the founder of MEGS, but was also President of the league for 14 years. Frank's idea, commitment, and dedication is alive today in each and every player and parent who are apart of the league.

In remembrance of Frank, MEGS invited his family to thank them for allowing their father and husband for taking the time and the effort in starting the fine league of the Mount Ephraim Girls Softball some 36 years ago.

Each of Frank's children; Debra, Patricia, Barbara, Denise, and Kirk received a special commemorative Softball Plaque engraved with the dedication date as a keep-sake of this special day. Frank's loving wife Mary received a special basket of flowers. The flowers and commemorative plaques were presented by MEGS players Gabrielle Crain, Julie OʼBriwn, Leah Bocchicchio, Holly Fitzgerald, Cassidy Chambers, and Mackenzie Seymour.

The idea of dedicating the 2008 Season came about when MEGS player Taylor Gavin read an article in the NEWS on the passing of Frank Corson and found it heartwarming that Frank was the founder of the league she played on.

Taylor wrote a letter to the President of MEGS asking if they could dedicate the season in honor and remembrance of Frank. Current MEGS President Shawn Heslin gladly accepted the idea and the planning started from there.

When asked what the dedication day meant to him, MEGS President Shawn Heslin said "It was a wonderful day to honor a man who started this league from the ground up." Shawn further added "Taylor Gavin is a wonderful asset to our league and her idea and efforts will always be remembered."

Taylor's father, Chris Gavin added "Having the Corson family here today shows them we are grateful and not only means a lot to them, but to us as parents of these girls who are able to be a part of this league because of their father and husband's efforts for so many years."

Mount Ephraim: Demolition Is Underway At Former Haddonfield Lumber Yard

Photos and captions By Bill Bates

The concrete floor of the former steel building that sat in the back of the Haddonfield Lumber Yard property near 8th and Pennsylvania Avenues is all that remains as crews work on the middle buildings that are being demolished quickly.

The former Haddonfield Lumber Site that sits on Kings Highway and Centre Avenue in Mount Ephraim had a new occupant starting last week, the wrecking ball.  Crews from a demolition company have started tearing down the buildings that have been vacant for almost 4 to 5 years.

One construction official said the entire process to have the buildings razed should take two to three more weeks to complete.

One neighbor who stopped to talk with me as I was taking a few pictures said he opposes the 42 new homes that will be built at the site, but said it is better then looking at vacant old buildings.  A builder for the 42 new homes had not been signed as of the last Board of Commissioners meeting held in March.

Mount Ephraim: James Wesley Dye American War Hero Honored

9207275_109131486936   James Wesley Dye, a resident of Mount Ephraim and a true American Hero, was honored during a ceremony held at the Murray-Trout American Legion Post in Audubon, New Jersey.

The Audubon High School Class of 1943 held the event on February 14, and it was attended by many of his former classmates, present members of the Audubon High School Project Memorial Foundation, as well as members of American Legion Posts 262 of Audubon and Post 150 of Mount Ephraim.

Mr. Craig Burgass, an educator, poet and Navy Liaison from Audubon, was assisted by many of Jimmy Dye's classmates in the gathering of information concerning his military and historical records, making the presentations possible.

A photo of James Wesley Dye, combined with a brief description of his military service, was given to Bob Phillips, Commander of the Murray-Trout  American Legion Post 262 by Kathryn Cain, a member of the Class of 1943.

A duplicate presentation was made to American Legion Post 150 by Mr. David Kershaw, also a member of the Class of 1943. The Project Memorial Foundation member of Audubon High School were given the picture of James Wesley Dye, as well as a plaque. Both the picture and the plaque will be hung in the main hallway of Audubon High Schools rotunda so that all who enter the school can see and read about this American Hero.

The picture of James Wesley Dye presented to American Legion Post 150 is being displayed in the Mount Ephraim Borough Hall so the visiting public may read the story of one of Mount Ephraim's young men who left his home to serve his country, but would never return. His sacrifice is a vital part of our Borough's history, and we hope to honor his memory in this manner.

James Wesley Dye was a Aviation Radioman 3rd class, US Navy, captured on Chichi Jima Island (in the Bonin Islands Group) when his Avenger airplane was shot down on February 18, 1945 during World War II.

Assigned to the carrier USS Bennington, he was on an Avenger crew with Ensign Bob King (pilot) and gunner Grady York. Dye and York bailed out, and King managed to fly the plane (minus most of its left wing) back to the USS Bennington. On February 25, 1945, Jimmy was executed by beheading on orders of Japanese Navy Captain Shizuo Yoshii.

Parts of his body were removed and later served as food to high ranking Japanese officers, as part of the spirit warrior indoctrination (the Japanese Army on Chichi Jima had plenty of food). After the war, his remains were recovered by American soldiers, and returned to Hawaii. Captain Yoshii, the Japanese officer who ordered his death and cannibalization, was tried for War Crimes in 1947, executed by hanging, and buried in an unmarked grave on the island of Guam (where the trial was held).

Jimmy was friendly and outgoing, and well liked by his fellow sailors. His life and death are described in the book, "Flyboys" by James Bradley.

His fiance, Gloria Nields, had given him a white scarf, which he always wore when flying; it became a souvenir of a Japanese lieutenant.  Burial:

 Joseph F., Jr. "Frank" Corson Retired Captain / Current President March 15, 1931 - March 18, 2008

By Bill Bates

NEWS Correspondent

It is a very sad week for the MEPRI Organization and the entire community of Mount Ephraim, as a well respected and dedicated member of the community has passed on.

It is with deep regret to announce the passing of Frank Corson, EMT who was a long time member of M.E.P.R.I. (Mount Ephraim Police Reserves Incorporated) Ambulance, Squad 4 for more then 22 years. Frank ran countless hours of volunteer service on the ambulance for Mount Ephraim as well as surrounding communities where they were 200831_frank_corson_006 called upon often. Frank answered calls with many members from the community and touched everyone with has charming personality and sense of humor. Frank was the most dedicated heart and soul members of MEPRI Ambulance and adored his hobby enough to have it as his custom license plate "Squad 4".

As you can imagine, Frank's talent and continuous dedication did not go unnoticed as he received several awards over the years. Many meals were missed and many nights were spent away from home and from his loving family. Frank shared his passion of running on the squad with his beloved wife Mary as well as his oldest daughter Debbie over the years and they answered many calls together. Frank also was an avid collector of trains as his entire basement reflected that. Frank showed off his second favorite hobby every chance he got to family and friends that stopped by. Frank was always working on something whether it was the house, his trains, or something for the MEPRI organization. Just about every Friday night, you could find Frank at the MEPRI building where they were conducting BINGO to support the self 200831_frank_corson_022 funded volunteer ambulance. Frank always worked the card window..
