Sgt. James W. Harvey II, 23, of Toms River, N.J., died June 20 in Ghazni province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit with small arms fire. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 2nd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Knox, Ky. Jimmy was the grandson of the late Thomas "Buddy" and Betty Cummings, and the late James W. Harvey, and nephew of the late Patricia Cummings Czachowski. He is survived by his loving parents James S. and Susan L. Cummings Harvey of Toms River, his 3 devoted sisters Christine and Steve Douglas of Colonia, Robin and David Raffaele of Scotch Plains, and Tracey Harvey of Toms River, his 2 nephews Ryan and Michael, his uncle Joseph Czachowski and his uncle and aunt Robert and Gina Harvey and a very large extended family.

When she was looking at colleges, Ashley fell in love with Athens, and the University of Georgia quickly became her first choice for school where she was a member of Sigma Kappa sorority and graduate in 2004. Ashley grew up in Louisiana and New Jersey, but enjoyed living in the South where she fell in love with Athens. Even after she moved to Savannah, Ashley regularly returned to to the city of Athens. She rarely missed a University of Georgia football game. She was a newlywed, so she was looking forward to coming home and buying a house. After the leave, that's what she was focusing on. In Iraq, she was working to create that country's police force and had a promising career in the Army and whatever else she chose to do later. She had only been married about a year. She was 23.

Dempsey Reminds Americans to Remember Meaning of Memorial Day

WASHINGTON, May 28, 2012 - In a round of Memorial Day television interviews today, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff urged Americans to reflect on the meaning of this national holiday, a message underscored by the on-going mission in Afghanistan as well as fresh reminders of the military's obligation to be ready to respond if called upon.

"I would ask people to take a solemn moment at some point during the day to remember exactly what we are celebrating and that is we're celebrating our freedom," Army Gen. Martin E. Dempsey told NBC's "Today" show in an appearance from the Pentagon. "The freedom that was purchased by more than two million men and women throughout the course of our history and, of course, more than 64-hundred or so in the past 10 years alone."

On multiple morning news programs, questioning quickly turned to the war in Afghanistan, with Dempsey saying he defines progress there as having Afghans able to provide for their own security and governance.

Staff Sgt. Joseph D'Augustine, 29, of Waldwick, N.J., died March 27 while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to 8th Engineer Support Battalion, 2nd Marine Logistics Group, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C. Beloved son of Anthony and Patricia D'Augustine. Devoted brother of Michele, Nicole and Jennifer. Joseph graduated from Waldwick High School where he excelled in football and wrestling. The morning after he graduated high school Joseph went straight to Camp Lejune for boot camp. Joseph served in the United States Marine Corps for 11 years. 
His tours included Iraq (2), Afghanistan (2), South Korea, East Timor and Okinawa. He was stationed/resided in many locations but most notably in Camp Pendleton in San Diego, CA and Camp Lejune in North Carolina. On Tuesday April 3, 2012 Staff Sgt. Joseph D'Augustine was brought home to Waldwick as we honored him with a "Hero's Return" through the streets of Waldwick.

Marine Lance Cpl. Hicks was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. Hicks was killed when an improvised explosive device detonated as his unit was on patrol. Jon was a quiet and well-behaved teen who neighbors remember as a gentleman. After graduating in June 2005 from Hammonton High School in Hammonton, New Jersey, he decided to work a little and relax for six months before deciding what he wanted to do. His desire to do something good with his life is what motivated him to join the Marines in January 2006. While Jon was in Iraq, he would write his family to send candy and potato chips, which he shared with other Marines and Iraqi children. He was due to return home in November and wanted to join the police force in Atco, the section of Waterford Township, after the Marines. Jon loved football and kept up with the Philadelphia Eagles. He also liked playing video games and paintball.

Cpl. Kevin J. Reinhard, 25, of Colonia, N.J., died January 19 while supporting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. They were assigned toMarine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 363, Marine Aircraft Group 24, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, III Marine Expeditionary Force, Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. Reinhard had enlisted in the Marines in the spring of 2008 and was serving his second tour of duty overseas. He was due to return home to New Jersey in a few weeks. Reinhard was a 2005 graduate of St. Joseph High School in Metuchen, where he played on the volleyball team. He was part of the Lucky Red Lions helicopter squadron HMH-363. The unit deployed last August to southern Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, and is set to return home in March. The unit's mission is to provide assault support, transport Marines and critical supplies, as well as equipment during expeditionary operations. Kevin only had a few short weeks left to his deployment when his helicopter crashed in Afghanistan, resulting in his death. It was his second deployment. For his family and his friends he was already a hero… before he ever put on a uniform for his country. The uniform only announced to the rest of the world what a wonderful man, what a wonderful soul he was – that he was a hero for all of us. Kevin leaves behind, to forever hold him in their hearts, his mother and father, James B. and Kathleen Rose, as well as his sister Kathleen Marie of Colonia. Extended family includes his grandparents, James R. and Mary Ann Reinhard of South River. Marine Lance Cpl. Christensen was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.  Curtis was born at the Philadelphia Naval Hospital and attended Delran High School in New Jersey but was currently a resident of Collingswood, New Jersey. On his 28th birthday, he told his family of his plans to join the Marines and dedicated himself to making it work. Six months before boot camp, he stopped smoking, drinking, ran every day and joined the gym. Curtis never did anything half way and his dedication paid off. Upon graduation from boot camp, he was presented an award for earning the highest marks in physical training – not bad for someone who was the "grandpa" of the group. When he joined the Marines on October 16, 2006, he was trained as a machine gunner and was promoted to lance corporal on December 1, 2007. But his real dream was the hope of joining a special operations team similar to the Navy SEALs. Curtis was an avid photographer and outdoorsman – remembered as fun-loving and caring.

Ryan and Linda (nee Sharp). He was the brother of Christopher D. Ryan and his wife Khara of Gloucester City and Lauren D. Ryan of Haddon Heights. His maternal grandparents were the late William J. (Former United States Marine) and Barbara H. Sharp formerly of Gloucester City abd his paternal grandparents were the late James M. and Ruth Ryan. Marc was a weapons specialist for the United States Marine Corps and served our country with pride, honor and courage. He is a hero to all and fought for the freedom of those less fortunate. Private 1st Class Sausto of Somers Point, New Jersey attended Oakcrest High School and always had aspirations to be in the military. He had been in the Army for eighteen months and had just been deployed in March. While his time in the service was brief, Sausto's dedication and sacrifice will continue to be monumental in the eyes of those who knew him best. The youngest of three children, he was a shy late bloomer who only came into adulthood once he enlisted. As a teenager in New Jersey, he was an active member of the Mainland Baptist Church, attending services regularly and taking part in summer camps. He was 22.

Christie Orders Flags Lowered to Half-Staff in Honor of Fallen Military Servicewoman

Trenton, NJ – Today, Governor Chris Christie signed the following Executive Order:
 
Executive Order No. 94 − Ordering all State buildings to fly flags at half-staff on Thursday, May 10, 2012 to honor the service and sacrifice of United States Army Sergeant Shauna Brocklebank Adams, who grew up in Long Branch, graduated from Montclair State University in 2008 and enlisted in the United States Army in 2010. Sergeant Brocklebank Adams tragically lost her life during a military training exercise in South Korea.

Governor Corbett Issues Flag Order to Honor Fallen Army Captain

Harrisburg – Governor Tom Corbett today ordered all U.S. and Pennsylvania flags in the Capitol Complex and at commonwealth facilities in Lehigh County to fly at half-staff on Wednesday, May 2 to honor U.S. Army Capt. Charles R. Barnes, a native of Lehigh County.

Capt. Barnes was listed as missing in action after contact was lost with his aircraft in Vietnam on March 16, 1969. The U.S. Department of Defense recently announced that his remains had been identified.

Capt. Barnes will be buried with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery on May 2.

All Pennsylvanians are invited to join in this tribute.

Philadelphia Soldier Missing from Vietnam War Identified

 

            The Department of Defense POW/Missing Personnel Office announced today that the remains of a serviceman, missing in action from the Vietnam War, have been identified and will be returned to his family for burial with full military honors.

            Army Capt. Charles R. Barnes of Philadelphia, Pa., will be buried May 2, in Arlington National Cemetery.  On March 16, 1969, Barnes and four other service members departed Qui Nhon Airfields bound for Da Nang and Phu Bai, in a U-21A Ute aircraft.  As they approached Da Nang, they encountered low clouds and poor visibility.  Communications with the aircraft were lost, and they did not land as scheduled.  Immediate search efforts were limited due to hazardous weather conditions, and all five men were list as missing in action.

            From 1986-1989, unidentified human remains were turned over to the United States from the Socialist Republic of Vietnam (S.R.V.) in several different instances.  None of the remains were identified given the limits of the technology of the time.

11-Year- Battle Between ACLU and Veterans of Foreign War Over the Mojave Desert Cross Ends

The U.S. District Court for the Central District of California approved and signed a settlement agreement between the Department of Justice and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) to exchange one acre of land at Sunrise Rock for a donated object of equal value. The original memorial site on Sunrise Rock will move to the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 385E in Barstow, Calif., so the post can restore the memorial.

Litigation surrounding the Mojave Desert Veterans Memorial has been ongoing since March 2001, when a lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, arguing that the display of a cross in the memorial violated the Establishment Clause of the U.S. Constitution. In April 2010, the Supreme Court reversed a lower court decision, sending the case back to the district court to reconsider the land exchange. Had the Supreme Court not reversed the decision, the 7-foot-tall cross, which has been honoring veterans for 78 years, could have been removed.

Vietnam War Hero to Receive Posthumous Medal of Honor

Sabo Jr., a rifleman with the 101st Airborne Division during the Vietnam War, will posthumously receive the Medal of Honor in a May 16 ceremony, White House officials announced yesterday. Army Spc. 4 Leslie H. Sabo Jr., who served with Company B, 3rd Battalion, 506th Infantry, 101st Airborne Division. Sabo will receive the Medal of Honor posthumously in a May 16, 2012, White House ceremony for his valor in the Vietnam War. Sabo is credited with saving the lives of several of his comrades in Company B, 3rd Battalion, 506th Infantry, when his platoon was ambushed near the Se San River in eastern Cambodia on May 10, 1970. Sabo's widow, Rose Mary Sabo-Brown, and his brother, George Sabo, have been invited to the White House for the ceremony. President Barack Obama recently telephoned Sabo-Brown to inform her that her late husband would receive the nation's highest award for valor. "It was a very emotional day -- a very, very emotional day,” she said. I couldn't even sleep that night. And … when I did fall asleep finally and I woke up the next morning, I went, 'Now wait a minute, did I dream this? Is it really real?' I couldn't be more proud of him. In her home near New Castle, Pa., Sabo-Brown has set up a museum of sorts in tribute to her late husband and his comrades who were killed in Cambodia. When his platoon was ambushed from all sides by a large enemy force, Sabo charged the enemy position, killing several enemy soldiers. He then assaulted an enemy flanking force, successfully drawing their fire away from friendly soldiers and ultimately forcing the enemy to retreat. While the platoon was securing a re-supply of ammunition, an enemy grenade landed nearby. Sabo picked it up, threw it, and shielded a wounded comrade with his own body -- absorbing the brunt of the blast and saving his comrade's life.

Christie Orders Flags Lowered to Half-Staff in Honor of Fallen Military Serviceman

 

Trenton, NJ – Governor Chris Christie signed the following Executive Order:

 

Executive Order No. 93 − Ordering all State buildings to fly flags at half-staff on Friday, April 20, 2012 to honor the service and sacrifice of United States Marine Corporal Derek A. Kerns, who grew up in Woodstown, entered the U.S. Marine Corps upon graduating from Woodstown High School and was based at Marine Corps Air Station New River in North Carolina. Corporal Kerns tragically lost his life during a military training exercise in Morocco.

The aftermath of last week’s killing of 16 Afghans has prompted a flurry of speculation into the mind of 38-year old U.S. combat staff sergeant Robert Bales. In particular, the injuries to it.

Traumatic brain injuries are so common among today’s troops that the military has spent over $42 million for a test to detect them, a test that Bales most likely took before his final deployment to Afghanistan. The problem is, that test has failed miserably.

Army Pfc. George A. Porter, 21, was taken prisoner Feb. 11, 1951, during the battle of Hoengsong, said the Department of Defense POW/Missing Personnel Office.
Porter, of Battery B, 15th Field Artillery Battalion, was unaccounted for until the 1990s, when North Korea gave the United States more than 200 boxes of remains from the war.

He was a resident of Philadelphia PA.

Trenton, NJ – Today, Governor Chris Christie signed the following Executive Order:

 

Executive Order No. 86 - Ordering all State buildings to fly flags at half-staff on Monday, January 30, 2012 to honor the service and sacrifice of United States Marine Corporal Kevin J. Reinhard, who was raised in Woodbridge and attended Ramapo College and Middlesex County College, and in 2008 interrupted his studies to enlist in the United States Marine Corps. Corporal Reinhard lost his life serving on active duty in Helmand Province, Afghanistan while supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.

 

In Iraq, the last to fall: David Hickman, the 4,474th U.S. service member killed

GREENSBORO, N.C. — To find Army Spec. David Emanuel Hickman on the morning after his unit returned to Fort Bragg from Iraq, you had to drive 100 miles north, to his home town. Up Highway 29, less than two clicks from the northeast Greensboro cul-de-sac where he grew up, Hickman was in Lot 54 in the Garden of Peace at Lakeview Memorial Park Cemetery.

Freshly turned red soil covered his coffin, which went into the ground two weeks and a day before he was due home. There were two shriveled carnations on the damp dirt. There was no marker yet, no indication that this was a soldier’s grave.

Hickman, 23, was killed in Baghdad by a roadside bomb that ripped through his armored truck Nov. 14 — eight years, seven months and 25 days after the U.S. invasion of Iraq began.

He was the 4,474th member of the U.S. military to die in the war, according to the Pentagon.

And he may have been the last.

Wreaths Across America Will Travel Through NJ Saturday, Dec. 10-cnbnews.net

The United States Congress has designated the Second Saturday of December of each Year as Wreaths Across America - in 2011 that will be Saturday December 10, 2011.
Each year a convoy of trucks travels from Maine to Virginia to deliver the wreaths that will be placed at Arlington National Cemetery on this date. This year the convoy will be escorted by 14 Gold Star Families as well as Police units from Maine and other states.
