Brooklawn: New Broadway & Circle to be Improved
Local hunter gets rare kill

CHEERS AND JEERS for the month of NOVEMBER

Bill’s Point of View:

JEERS-To former NJ Senator Wayne Bryant. The fact that he along with more than 130 lawmakers in New Jersey have been indicted and found guilty of robbing the taxpayers, this has to be some kind of record for fraud.

CHEERS-To the neighbors and friends of Evan Goldglantz, of Gloucester City,Cheersjeers who helped him in his time of need. Evan was burned over 90 percent of his body in an accident that occurred at his home on Division Street. He is being treated at the Crozier-Chester Medical Center, One Medical Center Blvd., Upland PA 19103.

JEERS-What is it with people in Gloucester City who use the public trash cans on Broadway for their personal garbage? A Broadway resident writes, “It's bad enough I pick up litter every day in front of our property, and then there is no room to put it the trash can because someone keeps dumping household trash (including items which could be recycled-not thrown away) in those cans.  It smells rank, and attracts vermin including squirrels that jump in, rip apart the bags and distribute it throughout the street when they're running away.  In the seven years I've owned this property, I've had almost no problems with the City’s garbage and recycling services, so it's not a cause of deficient city services.  Or is this just another symptom of the decline of owner inhabited properties replaced with renters who don't care?”

CHEERS- Mildred “MIMI” Stubbs, Gloucester City’s Parking Enforcement Officer, is retiring this month. We might not have always agreed with her “zeal” for enforcing the no parking law. But we give her credit for never showing favorites. She treated everyone the same. In fact she even ticketed a police car that was illegally parked. Enjoy your retirement MIMI.

CHEERS- To the NJ Superior Court who upheld the repeal of Cheerleaders Bar liquor license, Route 130 and Klemm Avenue for serving alcohol to the man who killed the Reed family.  The court agreed that the bar served alcohol to Humberto Herrera-Salas, who was 23 at the time of the April 15, 2000 crash, even though he was intoxicated. Herrera-Salas eventually was ejected from the bar and drove south in the northbound lanes of Route 130, crashing head-on into another car. Robert, 42, and Patricia Reed, 40, of Gloucester City were killed and two other people in their car were seriously injured.

JEERS-To those in Gloucester City and elsewhere who drive around with rubber testicles suspended from their bumpers.  A local resident writes, “Not only is it unsightly, it is downright obscene.  If you think your truck has power, it should be demonstrated under the hood, not dangling from the rear bumper. While walking with a young boy last week, I had to answer the little guys’ question, "What's that?"  as he pointed to the bumper ornaments.  Come on fellas, grow up and show some dignity.  Cut those things off and be decent.  A wise man once said, "If you have to brag about it, you probably ain't got it."

CHEERS- To Ed Anyzek for investing his money to beautify the Market Street "GATEWAY" to Gloucester. Who would think that an OIL COMPANY would shine as one of the most beautiful businesses in the city!  While much of their work is dirty and sooty, the Anyzek property at 916 Market Street is always "First-Class".  Keep up the good work Mr. Anyzek - it's a pleasure to be your neighbor.

JEERS- Gary Belfiglio writes, “First I would like to thank my friend Dave Munn, he was part of the commission and he help me with my building as much as he could. When I owned the property at 157 S. Burlington Street, I wanted to improve the appearance of the outside. But the Gloucester City Historical Commission refused by request. And threaten me with court and fines if I proceeded with my plans. Yet years later they have allowed the new owner to change the entire facade of the building. Why is there a double-standard?” (Note: Mr. Belfiglio is the former owner of Gary Bees now known as The Auld Dubliner.)

CHEERS-To Gloucester City Police Department for cracking down not only on underage drinking, but the one's supplying the alcohol as well.  Some may not see it as a big deal, but by nipping it in the bud, the life they save could be your own son or daughter.   Kudos!
