This restaurant is being built on property owned by the Bogeys, located on the banks of Big Timber Creek and bordered by Route 47 and Creek Road. The building's frame, roof, and siding have already been completed. The Bogeys received approval from the Brooklawn Borough Planning Board in May 2021 to move forward. UPDATED/CORRECTION William E. Cleary Sr. | CNBNews GLOUCESTER CITY, NJ (April 1 2025)(CNBNews)--At the February Gloucester City Council meeting, Police Chief Brian Morrell read a prepared statement criticizing Sandy Reed, a longtime resident currently running for a council seat at large on the Republican ticket, for expressing her opinion about the January 12 shooting in the 600 block of Ridgeway Street. He also made a cheap jab at Reed for misspelling words and criticized Republican chairman Jason Fanning. Morrell warned Reed to be careful about what she says about him, as he is not an elected official, and she could be sued. “I’ll remind you that I am not an elected official. The men and women of the Gloucester City Police Department are not elected officials. You should pay close attention to the public comment statement as it pertains to employees, and you are not immune to civil litigation for...

William E. Cleary Sr. | CNBNews gloucestercitynews.net graphic files **CHEER** – We often discuss the lack of community pride in Gloucester City, but we have not acknowledged the two individuals who consistently contribute to the community, such as Patty Heiser and Joyce Calzonetti. Recently, at Market and Baynes Avenue, we witnessed Patty picking up litter while pushing a baby carriage. A young child was walking alongside her, holding onto the carriage as she collected trash in a plastic bag. Several years ago, we were driving into Gloucester City from Brooklawn early on a Saturday morning when we spotted Joyce Calzonetti collecting litter and placing it in a bag in the trunk of her car. When we stopped to ask Joyce why she was spending her time picking up trash, she simply shrugged and replied, "It's just something I do." Today Joyce is active in the Gloucester City Tree Commission and...

CORRECTION/UPDATED William E. Cleary Sr. | CNBNews CNBNews photo credit CNBNews believes that the structure has never been maintained based on its appearance. The washed-out white oval on the right depicts a cub lion sitting before books. This sign is just a few feet from Market Street a main route for people coming in and out of the city. What impression do those people have of the school district and the City of Gloucester City when they view this dilapidated structure? A view of the same sign reveals the rotting plywood and pieces of concrete that broke away from the damaged structure. The school opened in the mid-1990s and cost taxpayers of Gloucester City and the state of New Jersey an estimated $20 million to build. The preschool addition, which opened in 2004, cost $11 million. ***** GLOUCESTER CITY, NJ (March 21, 2025)(CNBNews)--Anyone passing by the concrete signs welcoming students...

UPDATED MARCH 7, 2025 Editor's Note: We have made the detailed Brooklawn Police Department reports available for September, October, November, and December 2024. As time allows, the remaining reports for 2024 will be released in the upcoming weeks, along with current reports throughout the following year. Regarding the delay in publishing the reports below, I continue to edit the articles and write the commentary you read on CNBNews daily by myself. It is something I enjoy doing, though, at times, it can become overwhelming. In the past, the Brooklawn Police, along with the police departments from Bellmawr, Gloucester City, Mt. Ephraim, and Westville, would automatically forward their crime reports and press releases to CNBNews. Unfortunately, that is no longer the standard operating procedure for those agencies. The reports that are published, such as those from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Burlington County Prosecutor's Office, Camden County Prosecutor's Office, Cape...

Earlier, on January 12, a violent incident unfolded in the same neighborhood when two unidentified suspects discharged a total of seven gunshots at approximately 11:30 PM on a Sunday. One of the individuals, Nadir J. Thomas, a 23-year-old from Pennsauken, NJ, has been taken into custody and is currently held at the Curran-Fromhold Correctional Facility (CFCF) in Philadelphia, PA. According to Gloucester City Police, his arrest and incarnation in Philadelphia is unrelated to the recent shooting; residents anxiously await the capture of his elusive accomplice. However, investigators are still examining the possibility of a connection between this gunfire incident and the search warrant executed at Trusty's home. Trusty,...

UPDATED/CORRECTED William E. Cleary Sr. | CNBNews **MORE OFFICERS FOR GLOUCESTER CITY PD. WHY SO MANY?** Mayor Dayl Baile and the city council have welcomed four additional Class II officers into the Gloucester City Police Department, elevating the total number of personnel to 42. Collin Morrell, Brandon Keenan, Aydan Hagan, and Derron Cooney are the newest officers. The first three patrolmen were appointed during the December caucus meeting, earning $35 per hour, while Cooney was brought on board earlier in 2024 with an hourly wage of $30. During the October 2024 council meeting, an ordinance was passed to establish the roles of Civilian Police Aides and Non-Sworn Agents. Resident Ann Lessig posed a critical question about the number of agents being hired and whether these positions were volunteer-based. However, the meeting minutes reflect a troubling silence, as no answers were provided to address her concerns. Reflecting on the city’s history, seventy-five...

UPDATED: William E. Cleary Sr. | CNBNews The 2022 FBI Uniform Crime Rate indicates that Gloucester City has the highest crime rate in both the state of New Jersey and the entire nation, according to www.areavibes.com/ This data reflects the 2022 calendar year and was released from the FBI in September 2023; this is the most current data available. This alarming statistic prompts a critical examination of the factors contributing to such an elevated crime rate, particularly the role of leadership within the police department. One pertinent question arises: Could the city's crime issues be connected to the fact that we have a part-time police chief? In addition to the troubling crime figures, Gloucester City also faces significant financial challenges. The city's property tax rate is among the highest in New Jersey, leading to further concerns. We must ask: Is this burden on residents a consequence of having a part-time...

The Office of the State Comptroller found even motorists suspected of dangerous driving offenses were let go by New Jersey State Police. Posted on - 12/18/2024 TRENTON—An investigation finds that New Jersey State Police troopers routinely gave preferential treatment to certain motorists who presented a courtesy card or asserted a personal connection to law enforcement—even when motorists were suspected of dangerous offenses, like drunk driving, according to a new report by the New Jersey Office of the State Comptroller. OSC’s Police Accountability Project reviewed body-worn camera footage of 501 no-enforcement stops by New Jersey State Police--meaning stops where New Jersey State troopers did not issue tickets or make arrests. In 139 or 27 percent of these no-enforcement stops, motorists presented a courtesy card, claimed to have a friend or relative in law enforcement, or flashed a law enforcement badge and then were let go, OSC’s report said. CNBNEWS OPINION The NEVER TRUMPSTERS are still lamenting Kamala's defeat to Donald J. Trump. Not only did she lose the election, but the margin by which she was defeated was staggering, leaving her supporters disheartened and frustrated. This hatred of him is endless. And, it is bemusing that some of these individuals are unable to give a reason for their hatred. Recently, a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) worker in Florida directed her staff who were helping hurricane survivorsnot to go to homes with yard signs supporting President-elect Donald Trump. UPDATED WITH NEW INFORMATION/CORRECTIONS MADE William E. Cleary Sr. | CNBNews GLOUCESTER CITY, NJ (November 2, 2024)(CNBNews)--Why is it taking an astonishing five weeks to release the minutes from the Gloucester City Council meeting held on September 23? We believe there is no reasonable explanation for such a prolonged delay. A tape recording is made of the meeting; afterward, a clerk transcribes what was said. This situation raises concerns about the local government's transparency and hints at an attempt to conceal their activities from the public. During this meeting, the council passed 14 resolutions yet provided little to no explanation for these decisions, leaving taxpayers in the dark about how their money is being spent. One significant resolution on the table involves approving a contract with a drone company. While the language suggests that these drones will serve as essential equipment for the fire department, the details surrounding their specific...

The Gloucester City Mayor and Council are set to meet this Monday night, where they are anticipated to approve an important ordinance during its second reading aimed at expanding the police department. This proposed ordinance introduces two new roles: civilian police aides and non-sworn agents. Police Chief Brian Morrell, who also holds the position of temporary City Administrator, has advocated for these new roles. Currently, the police department operates with a dedicated team of 39 staff members. However, the ordinance does not specify the number of civilian aides and non-sworn agents that will be brought on board. Furthermore, it remains unclear what the compensation for these positions will be, leaving lingering questions about salary and remuneration unaddressed. Chief Morrell, who earns a salary of $184,000, is one of the highest-paid police chiefs in New Jersey for cities with a population of around 11,000. In addition, he receives $45,000 for his...

At times, the smoke was so thick that we couldn't see; my eyes were tearing, and it was causing me and Peyton to choke. My COPD made the situation worse, intensifying my coughing. As we got closer to Market Street, we found the source: several men burning leaves on a residential property. We made several calls to 911 to report what we saw and alert the Gloucester City Fire Department, but our first, second, and third calls went unanswered. After a few minutes, we received a call from Lindenwold. In today’s world, many of...

CNBNews graphics JEER—CNBNews, I wanted to bring to your attention some concerns about the situation on Thompson Ave. There is a house where the owner is turning the garage into an apartment without obtaining the necessary permits. The person connected electricity to the garage by using an extension cord from the house to the garage and buried the cord in the ground. For water, the man connected a garden hose from the cellar, ran it to the garage, and buried the hose in the ground. Both the electrical and water hookups seem unsafe to me. The property remains poorly maintained, with trash scattered around, an overgrown lawn, and Christmas decorations left out since last December. ~Signed WHERE IS THE HOUSING OFFICE? WILLIAM E. CLEARY SR. | CNBNews Editor GLOUCESTER CITY, NJ (August 15, 2024)--A CNBNews editorial released August 8, 2024 discussed the disbandment of the Woodynne Police Department and speculated that more police departments in New Jersey and across the nation might unite to address the high costs associated with union contracts for rank and file officers and salaries for top police department officials. That CNBNews opinion included a reference to the $185,000 salary for the part-time police chief that Mayor Dayl Baile and the City Council approved. According to ZipRecruiter, the Gloucester City Police Chief is making $52,000 more than the average police chief in the state of New Jersey, who is being paid $133,018. The nationwide salary for a police chief is $133,872. In a previous CNBNews editorial, we strongly condemned the Mayor and Council for their failure to hire a full-time City Administrator, a crucial position in any administration. We vehemently criticized the governing body for paying the current part-time City Administrator and part-time Police Chief, Brian Morrell, an excessively high salary of over $225,000. After our editorial was published Morrell lashed out at us in a telephone conversation. His tirade was filled with innuendos, screaming, personal attacks, and foul language. At the time, we wondered whether he was in immediate need of anger management. To be fair, Chief Brian Morrell's treatment of us paralleled the behavior of former Police Chief George Berglund before he retired. We published an article about a member of Berglund's family that first appeared in the Gloucester County Times, which triggered an irate response from him. He sent a letter of admonishment to the CNBNews Editor for...

With the disbandment of the Woodlynne Police Department on Thursday the responsibility of policing the community now falls on the Camden County Police. This change is not unique, as other communities may soon undergo similar transformations. The rising costs, including excessive salaries and benefits, are becoming too much for taxpayers to sustain. For instance, the Gloucester City Police Department is located in one of the poorest communities in the state of New Jersey. Yet, police officers in that city receive an average salary of $127,000, making it the third highest-paid police department in Camden County. The community of Gloucester City qualifies as an ABBOTT district and a UEZ Zone due to its low-income levels. Residents have recently received their property tax bills, which have increased every year on average by $1000 per household since 2018. This has contributed to the city being one of the top 30 communities in the...

William E. Cleary Sr. | CNBNews (Image courtesy of The Times of Israel) BUTLER, PA. (July 13, 2024)(CNBNews)—What a night! By now, everyone around the world knows that former United States President Donald Trump was shot Sunday evening during his rally in Butler, PA. The time was approximately 6:14 PM. As you watch the moments leading up to the assassination attempt you see President Trump turn his head to one side to speak with the people behind him. As he turns towards the front, he reaches up to his ear and then drops to the ground. Many of those in the audience behind him also get down. Some remained standing as if in shock. Within seconds, a team of Secret Service agents appeared on the stage surrounding Trump. As the agents lead him towards a waiting SUV, Trump raises his fist in the air and yells, “Fight! Fight!. The crowd...

William E. Cleary Sr. | CNBNews ROCK HALL, MARYLAND (JULY 6, 2024)-- The Maryland Fishing report we publish weekly has a picture of a man holding a gigantic Blue Claw Crab that he caught in the Chesapeake Bay. Seeing that photo brought back memories of the Rock Hall Gang from Gloucester City. For several years, between 50 and 100 men would travel to Rock Hall, Maryland, in the summer for an All-You-Can-Eat Crab picnic. The fee was nominal, maybe $25. It was 40 years ago, and most of the people who were involved have died. As such this reporter is guessing at the amount. Only men were allowed. Usually, it wasn't advertised because those running it didn't want it to become too large. Eventually, that was the main reason why it was stopped. This was "Back in the Day" in Gloucester City"; the year was 1980. The population of Gloucester...

EDITOR'S NOTE--We apologize to anyone who has left us a message on our Facebook accounts and are waiting for our response. On May 28, 2024, Facebook blocked our CNBNews account and our personal account for allegedly abusing its login process. They provided no specific details about the violation. Presently, we have 560 notifications and numerous messages waiting for us to review. We created our Facebook accounts 16 years ago, in 2008, and have never encountered any issues with Facebook until recently. Our accounts have been blocked three other times since January 1, 2024. The account reopening process they require is extremely frustrating. For example, despite us turning off the two-step authentication requirement, they keep turning it back on. At this point, we are contemplating permanently closing our Facebook accounts. If we decide to go forward with that step, we will notify you. In the meantime, you can find all of...

William E. Cleary Sr. | CNBNews Editor This week, Camden County Commissioner Director Louis Cappelli Jr., a prominent political figure in Camden County, strongly opposed two rulings of the United States Supreme Court. One concerned a homeless issue in an Oregon community, and the other pertaining to the Court's decision on the immunity of Presidents of the United States. I am seeking more information on Commissioner Cappelli Jr.'s track record in addressing homelessness during his 21 years in office. I distinctly recall instances where homeless encampments in Camden City were forcibly removed, and I'm interested in hearing about the specific initiatives and programs aimed at assisting the homeless population in Camden County . He stated that the County has made progress but gave no details. Additionally, I am curious about the financial resources allocated by Camden County to provide shelter for undocumented immigrants who have arrived in the region during...
