Girls Scouts Have Found a Meeting Place

GLOUCESTER CITY=Several days ago Helen Johns contacted ClearysNoteBook (CNB) asking for help in finding a place for her Girls Scout Troop of 50 girls to meet in Gloucester City. We are happy to report as a result of the publicity the Scout Troop has a new home. In fact they have two places to use, the First Presbyterian Church at Monmouth and Burlington Streets and the Pine Grove Fire House, 9th and Jersey Avenue. Helen writes, “Thank You so much Bill for running our plea on CNB for help in finding a building. The good people of Gloucester City have... Read more →

Letters: Sam’s Story

Hi Bill, As a rule, I don' cry or get emotional about many things. As a dog magazine editor, I have learned to try and be as dispassionate as I can. With some of the horrendous stories of animal abuse, cruelty or neglect - you simply have to, or you'd be blubbing all day. Well, OK. Sam's story defeated me. I lost my inner battle against my emotions. Please, I plead with you to watch his video - it contains no graphic imagery. Just Sam. Sam died. He shouldn't have. Please, please watch his story and tell everyone you know... Read more →

MEMORIES OF FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS

I remember very well the excitement of Friday night lights. I was a majorette for Gloucester City High School for four years in the 1950s. Flashing batons and oh, those white boots with silk tassels. The night games were more than a little dramatic. We sat on a blanket on the field. Wow, that wind from the river sweeping across the Charles Street Stadium sure was cold. Every move appeared more important under the lights. It was a whole different experience. Every play and player was carefully watched. It is wonderful that a whole new group of spectators and players... Read more →

Letters: The Best Candidate is Wil Levins

I am writing this letter in support of my husband Wil Levins. He is running as an Independent Candidate for Gloucester City Council. I want to start by telling you that he is a wonderful husband and father to our two girls. I’m sure you have seen this and heard it many times before. I just needed to say it again. He works very hard to support our family. I feel very lucky to have found someone like Wil to share my life with. You can be sure that if he is elected in November you will have someone that... Letters: Democrat's Tax and Spend Policies Continue to Ravage NJ

To the Editor: The spoils of Democrat Party rule in South Jersey mean the continuation of the tax-and-spend policies that have so ravaged the easy living in New Jersey. The incumbent leadership continues its attempts to use eminent domain policy and taxpayer money for capitalistic ventures. I refer to the latest push to develop a port in Paulsboro. I think such a port development will only lead to higher taxes and few jobs for Paulsboro residents. Look no further than (West Deptford Township’s RiverWinds project) for an example of the pitfalls of a government-run development scheme. Take note of the... Read more →

Local Girl Scout Troop Needs a Meeting Place

My name is Helen John a Girl Scout Leader and Troop Organizer in the town of Gloucester City and a few other towns. We had a round up of girls in September and had a wonderful turn out. I have plenty of leaders, girls and parents willing to help out the problem we have is we have no place to meet. I have contacted several places and as yet have not heard back. At this point and time I will have 50+ girls in our town that want to be Girl Scouts and learn to live the Girl Scout way... Read more →

Letters: Is Glenn Beck a Journalist or an Entertainer?

Dear Bill, Despite his frequent and open admissions of same, a significant number of the American Sheeple simply refuse to accept the fact that cable TV shock jock Glenn Beck is an entertainer, not a journalist, and that the role he plays for Fox News is nothing more than a thinly-veiled remake of Howard Beale, as portrayed by Peter Finch in the 1976 movie "Network": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dib2-HBsF08 If this movie segment does not open the eyes of those who rely on Glenn Beck's rants-for-revenues propaganda as their primary source of information, then hopefully seeing what really brings tears to *his* eyes... Raising Money to Fight Cancer

Hi All, I just wanted to remind you all of the event in the Summer to raise money for cancer. I already started my team and would love for anyone interested to come out and support this cause. Cancer effects so many people and the 2010 Relay for life in Haddon Township is a chance for us to celebrate, remember and fight back. It is a 24 hour event to signify that cancer never sleeps. We will have fundraisers and lots of different things. Registration is $10.00 and the luminary event and survivor event are both very touching. I have attached... Read more →

Gloucester City’s Freedom Pier should be Public Festival Area

Ever since the U.S. Government sold the vacated Immigration-Coast Guard Station to Gloucester City for $1 nearly 20 years ago, there have been persistent attempts to place this prime spot of publicly owned property into private hands. In that time, to the City's credit, a successful adaptive reuse has been found for the Coast Guard building itself. But, the remainder of the eight-acre property has lain fallow, so to speak, as potential uses have been discussed and studied time and again. Gloucester City has gotten rather good at staging celebrations, parades, festivals and public gatherings of every kind. In fact,... Read more →

BUSINESS OWNERS CAN HELP CITY FELINE COMMITTEE

Our committee does a Trap-Neuter-Return; a widely adopted program that helps reduces the population of feral cats running in our neighborhoods. We trap cats, have them neutered/sprayed and return them. Our city has adopted the TNR program, and we have taken an extra step with removing young kittens so they can be adopted into good families, rather than run the streets as feral cats. This helps reduce the total population of feral cats as well as provide families with pets that they will love and cherish. We need help with donations to continue rescuing kittens off the streets, it takes... Read more →

Attention Area Schools, Churches, Parents...Free Piano Offered

GLOUCESTER CITY-My husband and I recently moved to 700 Market Street in this fine city. We have offered to donate a lovely Wurlitzer piano to a school or organization in need, within the city. Thus far we have not had any appropriate requests. The piano is in good shape, fairly well-tuned, and has a matching bench. The organization that is in need of it would have to move it to their site. However, since we live close to the school it would only be a matter of loading it onto a rolling platform and moving it down the street. We... Read more →

Levins Says, "Here's Why You Should Vote for Me"

In a prepared statement Wil Levins, Independent Candidate for Gloucester City Council, Second Ward list reasons why voters should elect him on November 3rd. During this campaign I have both constructively criticized and complimented so as to never minimize the positive contributions being made to our community. I believe aggressive listening, continuous communication and mutual respect promote cooperation and can achieve positive results. In Business: It is nice to see a brand new business opening its doors at the center of our City. I trust TD Bank will be an anchor for a rejuvenated downtown commercial district. However, Gloucester City... Read more →

NEW SCHOONER A SUCCESS

I am delighted to hear our new schooner is doing so well. Capt. Chuck Reed keeps me up to date on the wonderful trips and parties on her. The only complaint I’ve heard (said with a smile) is everyone wants to stay longer. This seems to be another important step by our mayor James and our city council to bring life and fun back to the waterfront. So many of the older people have wonderful memories that center on the park area. It’s lovely to see it come to life again. Barbara Rein, Gloucester City Read more →

Letters: Setting the Record Straight on Education

www.ChristieForNJ.com I've been a teacher and loyal NJEA member for 13 years. But I can't sit idly by when the ugliness of political campaigns interferes with the important work teachers perform all over the state. It's hard to ignore the campaign for governor that's already well underway. And while I've always supported the efforts of the NJEA to educate its members about political campaigns, I've never been as disappointed as I am now with the NJEA's blatant attempts to smear Chris Christie's positions on education. The NJEA has actually sent teachers across the state a document lying about Chris' positions... Read more →

Letters: Car Accidents the #1 Killer of Teens

Hi Bill, Each year, 5,000 teens are killed in car accidents and more than 300,000 are injured. To the surprise of many, it isn’t drugs, alcohol, or suicide that take the most lives of American teenagers. It’s car accidents. And, the primary cause of these fatal collisions is driver error. To help teens become smarter drivers, Allstate New Jersey recently held three distracted driving challenges for teens – including one in Philadelphia and one in Skillman, NJ. The link below contains some startling statistics on teen drivers that I am certain would be of great interest to your readers. The... Read more →

Everything collected was given to Mrs. Cleary to provide Christmas for needy children. The program provided pens, pencils, crayons, markers, calculators, folders, notepads, book covers and more. RIAA Asks Schoolkids To Assist With Propaganda

Image via Wikipedia September 17th, 2009 Deeplink by Tim Jones Last week, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) announced an update to Music-Rules!, its flagship "curriculum" for teaching copyright law to schoolkids. We wrote about Music-Rules! and similar industry propaganda efforts in May, outlining some of their falsehoods and biases. For instance, the RIAA tells kids, "Never copy someone else's creative work without permission from the copyright holder" — omitting the important right to make creative fair use of existing content. It also coins a misleading term, "songlifting," (which the curriculum says is "just as bad as shoplifting"). Perhaps... Read more →

Letters: Resident is Upset with U.S. Post Office

It’s a shame and a disgrace the Post Office took eight mailboxes out of Gloucester City to save money. Why should the public have to be short serviced? Re: Camden/Glassboro Rail Proposal, DRPA is Fudging Data

However before setting this matter aside I do want offer my belief that the DRPA has deliberately provided wrong and misleading information about the current proposal. A Friend of the Gloucester City Police Dept.

T he floods on King Street must be frustrating for homeowners, but I don't think the police should be disparaged. I am referring to the resident on King Street who stated to the Gloucester City News: "I called the police right around 5 p.m. and asked to have them block the intersection. It took them almost half an hour to do that!" The August 13th Gloucester City News reported the police department responded to 1,445 calls during July. That is a little more than 46 calls per day; a lot of calls for this small town. Realize that a call... Read more →

WHERE ARE THE MONUMENTS?

Now that Gloucester City has completely destroyed the historical character of Cumberland Street at Broadway, I would like to know what has happened to the two monuments that have been there for many years. The first monument was erected in 1919. A marble shaft marked the settlement of the Dutch in 1623 of Fort Nassau. The second monument was dedicated to Mr. Hugh Ramsey at Presley and Jones Shipyard. It honored Mr. Ramsey for the unselfish care he gave both day and night to the victims of the flu epidemic of 1918. I hope these monuments find a suitable home... Read more →

Letters: How to Discipline a Tenure Teacher

An acquaintance of mine has been working on getting a New Jersey tenured school teacher disciplined in light of a) her third drunk driving conviction, which netted her a 180 jail term, b) information that she was at least once removed from her classroom for being intoxicated while on the job. Gloucester City: No Homemade Monuments at Cedar Grove

NO HOMEMADE MONUMENTS I have written about this problem before and some of you just don't get it!! The Cedar Grove Cemetery’s very existence depends on taking in money from grave sales, burials and installing foundations for monument stones. It is very unfair to those people who have paid good money for a beautiful stone, and then have someone make a marker alongside theirs. I will say, again, please stop this practice. Senator Madden Flip-Flops on Bill S1774

CATEGORY LETTERS Residents of South Jersey's 4th Legislative District should be aware of Democratic state Sen. Fred Madden's recent flip-flopping on S1774. He has shown that he does not stand behind his convictions and will buckle under pressure. S1774 arbitrarily limits firearm purchases to one per month despite the fact that gun buyers are already vetted by police for every permit. The bill was a symbolic, meaningless gesture to attack the nonexistent problem of intrastate handgun trafficking. It stalled in the Senate in February, one vote shy of passage, when Sens. Madden, Jeff Van Drew and Stephen Sweeney were the... Read more →
